Readers’ Holidays: The Big Book Festivals

A literary festival turns a town into a giant reading room. Authors talk about their new books, panels argue about old ones, and the audience spills out into cafes and bookshops between events. Planning a trip around one is one of the most sociable ways to travel as a reader.

Edinburgh in August

Edinburgh was the first city named a UNESCO City of Literature, and its book festival is one of the largest public celebrations of writing anywhere. It runs in August alongside the city’s other summer festivals, which means extraordinary energy and very busy hotels.

If you want to go, decide early. Book a room within walking distance of the festival venues, buy tickets for the author events you care most about as soon as the program is released, and leave unplanned time for the street performers and exhibitions all over the city.

Hay-on-Wye in Spring

Hay-on-Wye is a small market town on the border of Wales and England that has made books its whole identity, with secondhand and antiquarian bookshops along almost every street. The Hay Festival brings hundreds of events to the town each spring. Accommodation in town is limited, so many visitors stay in nearby villages or farmhouses and drive or take shuttles in.

Festival trip tips

  • Book your bed before your tickets. Rooms near popular festivals go first; events can be chosen later.
  • Mix big names with small sessions. Debut authors and local writers often give the most memorable talks.
  • Pack for the weather. Many festival sites involve tents, gardens and walking between venues.
  • Insure the trip. A festival trip is built around fixed dates; Cruise & Travel Insurance explains what trip-cancellation cover does and does not include.
