The Rooms Where the Books Were Written

There is something about standing beside a writer’s desk that no biography can give you. Britain has preserved an extraordinary number of these houses, many run by small trusts that care for the furniture, letters and manuscripts the authors left behind. This page covers the best known and how to fit them into a trip.

Pulteney Bridge in Bath

Jane Austen, Hampshire and Bath

Jane Austen’s House in the village of Chawton is the cottage where Austen lived and wrote her novels. Bath, where she lived for several years and set parts of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, makes a natural second stop.

Covered bridge in Oxford

Shakespeare’s Stratford

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust cares for Shakespeare’s Birthplace on Henley Street, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and the site of New Place, the family home of his later years. Oxford is an easy pairing.

Cattle in a Lake District lake

Wordsworth’s Lake District

Wordsworth Grasmere looks after Dove Cottage, where William and Dorothy Wordsworth lived, in the heart of the fells that shaped English Romantic poetry.

The Brontës in Haworth

The Brontë Parsonage Museum is the Georgian parsonage in the Yorkshire village of Haworth where Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë grew up and wrote. The museum holds a collection of the family’s belongings and manuscripts, and a free digital guide tells the story before, during and after a visit.

The house sits at the top of a steep cobbled main street, with the church and graveyard beside it and the moors just beyond. Allow time to walk out onto the moor paths: the open, wind-swept country explains Wuthering Heights better than any introduction. When we checked, the museum was open Wednesday to Sunday.

Dickens in London and Beyond

The Charles Dickens Museum occupies the Georgian terraced house on Doughty Street where the young Dickens lived with his family and wrote Oliver Twist. It is an easy half day in central London, and walking from there through Holborn, the Inns of Court and the City gives you the streets of his novels at street level.

Other houses worth knowing

  • Oxford and Cambridge are not single-author houses, but their colleges, libraries and riverside walks are steeped in the writers who studied and taught there.
  • Edinburgh combines Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson with a book festival every August. See the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature site for literary walks and sites.
  • Dublin has the James Joyce Centre, plus a literary pub culture and Bloomsday every June 16.

Before you go: opening days, guided-tour rules and booking systems change, and some houses close for conservation work. Always confirm on the museum’s own website. We do not list admission prices because they change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which English writers’ houses can I visit in one trip?

A loop from London can take in the Charles Dickens Museum, Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon, the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth and Wordsworth’s Grasmere. It is a lot of driving, so most travelers choose two or three and stay a few nights near each.

Are the Shakespeare houses open every day?

When we checked in October 2026, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust listed Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Shakespeare’s New Place as open daily. Hours vary by site and season, so confirm on the Trust’s website before you go.

Is the Brontë Parsonage open all week?

Not always. In October 2026 the museum listed opening from Wednesday to Sunday. Build your Haworth day around its current schedule.
